DUKE-UNC The Rivalry (This Time in Cameron)

If you didn't know -- I, A.R. Watson, Tasha and Erin Davis are all graduates of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. A great school and a great place to be, seriously it's cliche but Carolina is a special place.

At any rate we play Duke University (the blue devils)on Saturday at 9pm on ESPN. This rivalry is just as intense as Yankees-Red Sox or Auburn-Alabama or Michigan-Ohio State. I'd wager that it is the greatest collegiate rivalry, in any sport.

Well, I want to share that experience with you all. Last year we published something from a 1990 DTH entitled "Why We Hate Duke" and I also did a personal "Top 5" Duke games of my life. So I'll provide Game Day Coverage/Stories and the Links to those articles from last year below.

Enjoy and Go Heels! (Tar Heels is two words by the way)

"Now I realize that school spirit is a pretty goofy thing to some people, and we don’t really have a reason to hate other institutions of higher learning, but I’ll tell you something — I hate Duke with an infernal passion undying. I hate every leaf of every tree of that sickening campus. I hate every fake cherub 1930s Gothic piece of crap that litters the buildings like hemorrhoidal testaments to their imagined superiority. When I see those Dookie boneheads shoe-polishing their faces navy blue on national television, squandering their parents’ money with their fratty elitist bad sportsmanship antics and Saab stories, I want to puke all over Durham.

So this is my request, boys of basketball: Tonight, I not only want you to win, I want Krzyzewski calling home to his mother with tears in his eyes." - Ian Williams, 1990 Daily Tar Heel columnist.

lololol that was hilarious!! i loved it. i can always get with passion. of course its that serious. but so hard to explain to outsiders. they just don't get it. unless they're from florida. then they think they understand via the florida/florida st. football rivalry. texas, too.

however, the only tears will be coming from the hideously carolina blue sections of the dome. ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooh!!! take that!

Yeah right... Carolina beating Duke? THIS YEAR? Sorry... I had to take a minute to wipe the tears out of my eyes from the hysterical laughter that thought sent me into. From someone who spent four MISERABLE years in Chapel Hill observing the insanity of Franklin Street on the RARE occasion that UNC beat Duke, I have to say this: I sincerely hope that they haven't hired any extra police officers to patrol the area tonight. That won't even be necessary. trust me: The DTH will be printed in DUKE BLUE tomorrow :)

Oh yeah, and if you're looking for the game, it's coming on ESPN, not ESPN2... wouldn't want anyone to miss that butt whippin Carolina is getting ready to get!!!

not trying to be a hater...BUT...when did A.R. Watson graduate from UNC? being in the GAA don't make you alumni...

i'm kidding, folk. it's all love...

wish i was in NC to watch the game with y'all...

X Factor,

Confidence is one thing -- extreme arrogance is another.

We never said that Carolina was gonna beat Duke (don't know where you got that from) just that it's the best rivalry in sports.

X Factor said...

Wow... "extreme arrogance" is a little harsh, don't ya think? I don't play for the team, I'm just a fan :) Maybe it's wishful thinking on my part - guess we'll have to wait and see.

Rell said...

oh yea I wasn't talking about you -- I was just talking about the game in general, no disrespect.

Duke SHOULD win the game because, frankly, they're a better team, but that's what makes this great. The better team doesn't always win.

if anyone knows the history of this rivalry, they know that rankings don't mean squat when it comes down to the game itself. both teams BRING IT, no matter if carolina had lost all of their games, duke knows not to take the tar heels for granted, and vice versa.

so be smug in the laughter if you wanna, but if carolina beats duke, i won't be surprised at all.

duke wins by at least 15 tonight...the freshmen are gonna crack

carolina comes back to duke and upsets them in a couple weeks

UNC keeps it close most of the game, pretty much letting JJ do what he wants. Wouldn't be surprised if he had 40.

But because of the recent backlash with ACC officials i think Hansbrough will get a lot of calls.

goes into the final minutes UNC up 72-70, what happens from there is anyone's guess.

i agree; that rivalry is intense. watching those games gets you hype even if you're not a big sports watcher.

for the record, i like duke. my peeps hail from durham, so....

on another note, RELL, holla atcha girl! ain't seen you in a minute over in my neck of the woods.

good game, UNC loses 87-83.

Just can't stop JJ Redick... he is the best player in the country.

Rell -
This was very well put together. I read pretty much every link and every link from those links and I'm about to go check out some of those rivalry books at Barnes and Noble (I love this job - reading news is considered research, and thus work).

But I must admit my excitement about this game - along with Alpha and DTH-related stuff - is one of those things that makes me uncomfortable about my feelings towards college. This kind of stuff makes me feel like that old alum who just can't move on with his life. I was literrally jumping on my bed in Kansas City when we won the championship last year, because I'd dare not go to a bar in still bitter Kansas and Illinois loving Missouri and root for Roy and his Heels. My co-workers of the same age who attended schools with lackluster basketball programs just didn't understand.

I've been able to fool myself for the past three years by telling myself that it's not that bad since there are dudes on the team who were enrolled while I was still in college, but after this May that excuse won't fly anymore. Perhaps one day I'll get a life and move past what it is that I'm feeling, but is a life without hate for Duke even one worth living? There's a chance I'll never know.

I want Oscar picks. Who has time for UNC-Dook rivalry?!?!

Seriously, I'm enjoying some of Will Blythe's stuff this week. Plus I think this team has just as good of a chance at winning at Cameron as about any Tar Heel team has in the past couple of years. I think they are too young to be worried. Roy has done an amazing job with these guys. Plus I want to see Reyshawn go off. I mean OFF.

It's such a beautiful thing to see hatred of a rival school spewed across the blogashpere *choking up* I hate Notre Dame the same way you hate Duke. By the way, I hate Duke as well. I'm no fan of NC after taking out my beloved Illini last year... But I don't hate them.

Reading about Dook hatred is like fresh water to a dry, prickly, drought starved lawn....like that first breath after being deprived of air by your mean uncle who smothers your face with a pillow....like...well you get the picure.

Sherrell - you only posted part of that original post....that piece was longer than I thought.

Great job assembling links of why the Dook hatred. I hate that program and place with every living cell in my body. Shoot, its deeper than that...my DNA is coded to generate cells that hate Dook. Shoot...the molecules that chemically constitute my DNA is...well again you get the picture.

Here is to praying...yes praying that we beat Dook tonight!!!

BTW, I mean I graduated from Carolina twice....can a brotha get a mention?

Go Heels!
